Teenager Cressy Holmes-Smith helped children's dreams come true when she finished the Great North Run earlier this month.
The 17-year-old, from Ingleby Greenhow, raised £750 for the Make A Wish Foundation for children with life-threatening illnesses.
She said: "I ran the course in 2hrs 25mins and I chose to support Make A Wish because they help so many children the same age as me."
Make A Wish Foundation regional development manager Syd White said the charity was lucky to be boosted by sponsored events.
"This year, we saw a huge increase in the number of people running for wishes and hope to raise over £20,000."
Make-A-Wish Foundation, which started in the US, is the largest wish-granting organisation in the world and is established in 27 countries.
The UK branch has granted more than 3,000 wishes since it began in 1986 and is currently granting a wish a day.
