AN MP this week welcomed a seven per cent increase in the National minimum wage.
Vera Baird, who represents Redcar, is pleased at the rise from £4.20 to £4.50 an hour, but disappointed that there are still employers who try to avoid paying the minimum wage.
Last year the Inland Revenue carried out 6,000 investigations into employers who were not paying the proper rate.
"I am concerned that all low paid workers are aware that from October 1, their hourly rate is to be increased," she said.
"There is no room for complacency when it comes to enforcing the minimum wage.
"Anyone who thinks they are being paid less than the minimum wage should call the helpline on (0845) 6000 678."
