MORE than 30 schools in Newcastle are taking part in Walk to School Week, which begins today.
The national event has been organised to highlight the benefits of walking to children's health and to the school environment, as well as safety issues relating to increased traffic around schools.
In cases where it is not possible to let children walk to school, Newcastle City Council is urging parents to park away from the school and walk with children the final few metres.
Wednesday is International Walk to School Day, where children all over the world will be taking part.
