AN organic farm worker towed a coffin through the streets of Darlington yesterday as a protest against genetically modified crops.
Johnny Barton, 31, from near Inverness, is cycling from Scotland to London, towing the coffin behind him, as part of an anti-GM foods pilgrimage.
Mr Barton is making the 700-mile journey to take part in the Tractors and Trolleys protest against genetically modified foods in London on Monday.
He set off from Inverness on October 1, and is staying with other anti-GM campaigners along the way.
For the Darlington leg of the campaign journey, Mr Barton stayed with Martin Wood, of the organic food supply company Growing Green.
"The coffin's a symbol of how serious the GM issue is in my view," said Mr Barton.
"The journey has been pretty arduous, but it has been pretty inspiring to have people encouraging me on the way. Fortunately, there have been no strong winds coming at me. Although, if anybody finds a coffin lid on the A68, I will be grateful to have it returned."
