A pensioner was overjoyed yesterday after scooping £500 in The Northern Echo's Daily Cash Bingo game.
Eddie Graham celebrated with a glass of champagne after receiving his cheque from newspaper sales manager Patrick Masheder.
The 72-year-old, of Emerson Way, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, plans to spend the cash on a new fireplace surround.
He said: "I've been reading The Northern Echo every day for about 40 years. I've been doing the bingo since the day it started but I never expected to win.
"When I shouted out the lucky number to my wife she thought I was joking. It's the most I've ever won - I'm absolutely over the moon."
Game two of the Daily Cash Bingo started yesterday and runs for five weeks. Readers received their game card in Monday's paper.
