THREE Darlington councillors have held an innovative surgery to encourage parents and carers to take an active part in local politics.
Councillors Cyndi Hughes, Joe Lyonette and Glen Reynolds, from the Park East ward, held a Politics and Play ward surgery at the Dolphin Centre's soft-play room last Saturday. The idea of the surgery was to open it up to people who would not normally be able to meet their local representatives because of childcare commitments.
Coun Hughes said: "We need to meet people where they are, and if that means being available to constituents and their children in a playful environment, we're happy to do that. We have a duty to meet the needs and expectations of those who elected us."
More soft-play surgeries will take place on the first Saturdays in November and December, from 10 am until 11am.
