Public toilets are to be built in the Shambles on Stockton High Street.
Stockton Borough Council is seeking listed building consent to convert part of the Shambles into male and female toilets, disabled toilets and baby changing facilities.
Work is due to start in early 2004 and there will be further improvement works to the Shambles carried out.
The present toilets, on Stockton High Street, will not close until the new ones are open. The Shambles was chosen as the site for the toilets following consultation.
It is hoped they will be vandal-proof and include security cameras.
The works timetable will be displayed around Stockton High Street.
