THE Samaritans' offices in Darlington have undergone a £166,000 refurbishment.
The organisation's base in Woodland Road has been transformed into a modern facility, providing a relaxed and pleasant environment.
Volunteers used a nearby office for six months while the work was carried out.
The office will be opened next month, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Samaritans, but volunteers moved in to start work there yesterday.
The offices have full disabled access, secure interview rooms, office and administration space, bedrooms for volunteers who work through the night, a training room and operations room.
The work was funded by a £164,000 National Lottery grant and £12,000 from The Samaritans' fundraising efforts.
Isabel Robinson, deputy director for publicity and fundraising, said: "Now we have got this new centre, which we are very proud of, the difference is unbelievable."
One of the most important elements of the building is its provisions for the disabled, which include a lift and disabled toilets and shower.
Director Norma Bain said the organisation was hoping to recruit more volunteers, especially disabled volunteers, and attract more callers.
The organisation in Darlington has 84 volunteers and is training another 11, but it needs more help.
An e-mail system is being installed, with other technology, which is the biggest growth area of contact for The Samaritans.
Callers can visit the premises for a face-to-face talk with a volunteer, or telephone (01325) 465465.
Anyone wanting to volunteer can contact the recruitment line on (01325) 488679
