PEOPLE living in the North-East are most likely to take a holiday break close to home, according to research revealed yesterday.

More than one in ten Britons has never been on holiday outside the UK, while nearly a quarter have never left Europe.

About six per cent of people have never holidayed outside their own county, with those in the North-East (15 per cent) most likely to take a break close to home, according to the investment bank, Morgan Stanley.

Of the over-55s, 12 per cent had not had a holiday outside the UK, while 28 per cent had not ventured beyond Europe.

There were 22 per cent preferred Britain's South-West, while 20 per cent chose the South-East.

Of the Londoners questioned, 86 per cent opted for a long-haul destination, compared with 72 per cent in the North-East, East Midlands and Wales.

People from the West Midlands - 21 per cent - were the least likely to have had a holiday outside the UK.
