Members of Sunnybrow Residents' Association, near Crook, seized their opportunity when they discovered Sunnybrow Primary School was replacing its computers.
The chairman of the association, Rick Kelly, contacted the headteacher to inquire about having the computers for the community centre.
He was referred to Durham County Council, which agreed to donate five computers. The local community supported a collection to pay for the Internet connection.
The association now hopes to set up homework clubs at the centre on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4pm to 8pm, to help youngsters living in the village who do not have computers.
