A TEENAGER was inspired to design a winning trophy during a visit to a North Yorkshire glass firm.

David Bradley visited Andrew Sanders and David Wallace Glassmakers, in Pateley Bridge, with fellow students from Darlington College of Technology.

The firm uses tools and techniques that have changed little in more than 2,000 years.

David came up with the winning design for a trophy which will be awarded to the best all-round first year art and design student.

The 17-year-old, from Darlington, is studying for a National Diploma in Graphics.

"I did the design on paper and it only took a few minutes," said David. "I didn't expect to win and was surprised, but I thought it looked even better in glass."

Arts tutor Lynne Waterfall-Brown said investigating crafts people was an integral part of the course.

"We have always wanted a trophy in the department and the visit to the glassmakers provided the ideal opportunity to get one," she said. "It will be awarded every year to the student adjudged to have the best attitude, commitment and standard of work.
