MORE than one in five people say their mortgage has made them feel ill, and five per cent say it has damaged their relationship with their partner, research claimed yesterday.
About seven per cent of homeowners said they had felt depressed about their mortgage, while 15 per cent said it had left them feeling anxious, according to Sainsbury's Bank.
A further 13 per cent said their home loan had made them stressed, while three per cent said worrying about their mortgage had led to them having problems at work.
The main reason people gave for feeling stressed about their mortgage, or arguing as a result of it, was that they had borrowed too much, with 19 per cent of those questioned saying they had become stressed because they were finding it difficult to meet their monthly repayments.
About 12 per cent said they were worried more generally about repayments.
