SECURITY is being upgraded at three blocks of flats in Hartlepool after a series of break-ins.
Funding of £4,300 has been approved for a block in Fraser Grove and two in Elderslie Walk, on the Owton Manor estate.
The move follows a number of incidents when trespassers committed vandalism, gained entry to communal areas and broke into homes.
Now, Hartlepool Borough Council's South Neighbourhood Consultative Forum has confirmed the funding.
It is proposed to install metal doors at the rear of the communal entrances and fit an additional deadlock to the front doors.
Dave Frame, towncare manager for south Hartlepool, said: "Works have been carried out in recent years to improve the front entrances but not the back doors.
"It is proving extremely difficult to secure the rear areas and we hope these proposed works will help to improve security."
Councillor Tony Groom, chairman of the South Neighbourhood Consultative For-um, welcomed the decision.
He said: "Fear of crime is often worse than crime itself and it is vital that people feel safe in their own homes.
"I hope these proposed measures will help to prevent incidents occurring and give residents some peace of mind."
The proposals are subject to approval by councillor John Lauderdale, the cabinet member with responsibility for town management.
