A SCHEME to give children with disabilities and special needs the chance to take part in mainstream activities is in line for a national award.
Derwentside Leisure's inclusive play project helped ten families enjoy its summer holidays programme.
The scheme proved such a success that it has been nominated for a Community Care Award.
Sports development officer Colin McBride said: "It meant that the children, and also their families, had a break from care and the children had an absolutely fantastic time being included in a summer activity programme."
The scheme was funded with a £13,000 grant from the Children's Fund, which helped provide specialist training for youth workers and sports leaders.
The pilot project will now be expanded for future school holidays.
