PAUL Gascoigne's agents last night admitted that the former England midfielder could be on his way to the North-East to link up with Mick Tait's Darlington.
Grass Roots Management exclusively revealed to Northern Echo Sport that Quakers are among a number of options the former Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Spurs and Lazio star is weighing up.
A spokesman for Grass Roots management said: "Darlington are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Paul.
"He has plenty of options to consider and we should know more over the next couple of weeks."
Speaking yesterday chairman George Reynolds said he hoped to work around wage-capping restrictions in his ambitious bid to land the 36-year-old.
Reynolds said: "It's going to be difficult with the capping, meaning we can only pay out 60 per cent in wages.
"The fans would love him here and it would do the stadium good.
"We're trying to negotiate and it's not finished yet. I'd love to see him here."
Reynolds admitted that he believes he has found a way around the wage-capping system that would allow him to pay Gascoigne based on the number of fans he adds to the gates at the Reynolds Arena.
"I have found away around it but it's whether it would be acceptable to Paul," he said. "It will be a basic and then so much on the gate over so many. We wouldn't be breaking the rules."
