A CONTROVERSIAL application for a pub to stay open later has been approved.
The Windsors pub in Marske Road, Saltburn, will be allowed to stay open until midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights despite concerns from local people about noise and public disorder.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council received 48 letters of objection against the proposal to extend the pub's public entertainment licence from 11pm to midnight.
The licensing committee has granted a licence for six months, until April, when it will be reconsidered.
Committee chairman Mike Findley said: "We have imposed conditions to help address all the concerns raised by residents."
The 12 conditions include the removal of the juke box and if people are drinking outside, they must have plastic glasses and be sitting down.
The pub must be empty by 12.10am, it must be soundproofed and all doors and windows must be kept closed.
Owner David Stokes said he was pleased with the decision.
"I am just reflecting my clientele's demands but I am also taking residents' concerns into consideration."
He said he presented 42 questionnaires to councillors which had been filled in by customers and all of them wanted it to stay open longer.
"I think it's unfair that the people of Saltburn have to travel to Redcar or Middlesbrough to get a late drink," he said.
Joan Guy, chairman of Saltburn, Marske and New Marske parish council, said: "I am extremely disappointed with the decision. We'll just have to see if they keep to the requirements."
