A DISPLAY of artwork created by one man has proved so extensive that two exhibition centres are sharing the load.

More than 600 pieces by a craftsman hailed as Finland's most influential designer of the 20th Century, are being displayed simultaneously at the National Glass Centre, in Sunderland, and the city's Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art.

The exhibition of work by Tapio Wirkkala, who died in 1985, aged 70, opened yesterday, in a viewing attended by the Ambassador of Finland, Pertti Salolainen.

Tapio Wirkkala, Design Legend from Finland, is the exhibition's only UK stop on a world tour and includes sculpture, glassware, furniture, architectural projects and industrial design created by Mr Wirkkala throughout his life-time.
