Grangetown 2 v 2 Lingdale United: Lingdale United came to the fixture with the desire to continue their unbeaten run in the league.
In a tricky fixture, "Dale" totally dominated the opening exchanges and came close to scoring on a number of occasions. Early dominance was rewarded when a corner taken by Wayne Allen, found Mally Whitehead who headed past the Grangetown keeper from close range. Grangetown were always in the game, but it took until the 44th minute to register the equalizer. With Lingdale appealing for a offside, the play was allowed to continue, giving Allen Ford the chance to level for the home side.
After the interval it was Grangetown who took the early initiative, and won the ball well in midfield to put "Dale" on the defensive. Few chances were created by the home forwards to take the lead. On 65 minutes an attack by Lingdale created the chance for Thomas Hololob to head down a cross for Mark Iston to volley in from 20yds, giving the Grangetown keeper no chance. For a while "Dale" were the stronger team, with Hololob taking shots at goal and creating chances for his team mates, through his hard work and pace. Late in the game Lingdale were denied the win when Simon Millington hit a 25yd shot that took a deflection to beat the Lingdale keeper.
League Cup
Great Ayton 2 v 2 Goldsborough
(Great Ayton won 5-4 on penalities)
Early play suggested that this game was going to be a close, and so it proved to be. Both teams worked hard in midfield to attempt to win the supremacy, with both defences giving nothing away. It was Ayton who took the lead from a free kick, when man of the match Jonathon Best rose above the visiting defenders to head home. As the game progressed chances begun to be created, a cross by Chris Ripley found Martyn Hyde who's strong header flew over the Goldsborough cross bar. At the other end the Ayton defence was caught out twice to allow Micky Dent the chance to close in on goal, but both his efforts sailed over the goal.
At the start of the second half, a poor goal Clearance by Paul Clements allowed Micky Dent to chip the keeper from 20 yards to put Goldsborough back in the game. Good work between Ripley and Murray, created the chance for Murray to head narrowly wide of the visitors goal. Goldsborough stung the home side on 60 minutes when the Ayton defence failed to clear the ball, and it fell nicely for Stuart Marsay to drill the ball past Clements. Ayton went straight on the attack, Ripley again created a chance for Murray, but his well stuck shot was equally well saved by Matthew Sanderson. For the second week running it was left to Joe Busby to weave his magic, beating two defenders he closed in on goal to score the equalising goal to take the game to extra time.
During extra time both teams went on the attack to find the winning goal, Clements in the Ayton goal had to make a point blank save to deny a Goldsborough forward. Similarly Matthew Sanderson pushed a terrific header by Richard Davey round the post. With very little between the two sides it fell for penalties to decide the outcome. Great Ayton converted all 5 penalties with Paul Clements making the decisive save for Ayton stopping a well struck shot.
Lingdale Tavern 3 v 0 Black Swan
With Garbutt and Lamb defending well for Swan, the deadlock was broken by Shane Breckon, who found himself unmarked on the edge of the box and lifted the ball over Butler to give Tavern a slender lead at the interval.
Tavern increased the lead when Neil Calvert hit a 20 yrd screamer that flew into the top corner of the Swan goal. Swan continued to press forward, Moore in the Tavern goal had to make saves from Scott, Davie and Clark, before Tavern made the game safe. A defensive mistake on the edge of the area, gave the chance for Liam Ball to score, and seal a good win.
Redcar Mac Park 6 v 2 Stakesby
Following a string of recent defeats, Stakesby showed some resolute defending in the early stages, and made it difficult for Redcar to create any real opportunity to score. Once the first goal came for the home side on 30 minutes, the flood gates opened. In the last 15 minutes of the first half Redcar grabbed four goals with Simon Nozedar claiming a hat trick and Nick Ayres scoring one.
Following the interval, Stakeby undeterred by the score line, pressed forward and pulled a goal back when Headlem scored on 58 minutes. With Redcar thinking they had the game won, Stakesby for a period were the better side. However when Mendum added a 5th for Redcar the tie looked safe, only for Steele to notch a second for the visitors. Redcar finally sealed the game when Nick Ayres scored his second goal, to send Redcar into the next round of the competition.
Lealholm 6 v 0 Brotton
Once Lealholm took the lead, on 20 minutes when Andy Crooks set up the chance for Butler to score, Lealholm players grew with confidence, and they started to control the game. Other goals were scored by Crooks, Darren Harland in goal scoring form, to add two more goals for Lealholm.
Hinderwell 7 v 0 Loftus
What might be classed as the result of the day for Hinderwell, a big crowd turned out for this local derby fixture, and were rewarded by a fine display by the home side, scoring an impressive seven goals. Playing the better football, on a much improved playing surface, Hinderwell were on the attack from the off, and opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Paul James hit a sweet left foot drive to give the visiting keeper no chance. Playing well in midfield Richard Bales, was stroking the ball around, creating chances for his forward players. Before half-time Rob Jones was set up by Bales to add a second for Hinderwell.
With skipper Keith Brown giving a solid display in the heart of the home defence, a period of sustained pressure by the visiting team was repelled. A good move by Hinderwell, and a second goal for Rob Jones, alleviated any chance of Loftus coming back into the game. Rob Jones completed his hat trick, with Morrison, Wayne Brown, and a towering header by Richard Sussons rounded off the scoring.
