Only days after Whitby Town Council put Edwin Jowsey's name forward for the districts' young sportsman of the year award, the talented teenager was on the road once more for the last time this season.
Donington Park played host to the final stage of the HSCC championship, after the problems of the last few weeks the Team Garbutt Heaters mechanics worked hard on ensuring the car was at full capability. Unfortunately, the long season had taken its effect on the powerful machine and as such Edwin's mechanics could only guarantee him 85 per cent engine performance.
Despite the engine difficulties, Edwin (pictured) secured pole during qualifying for a record 17th time this season. The weather on the day of the race was dry and partially sunny, but the track remained cold.
Edwin made a solid start closely followed by last years HSCC championship winner. The two drivers left the rest of the 30-strong field behind them as they entered a period of 'thrust-and-parry' for the lead.
Although Edwin had won the championship back in July, Jowsey wanted to maintain his 100 per cent victory record in this discipline; which had never been achieved before in the history of the HSCC championship.
As the contested unfolded the two front-runners became increasingly entangled, in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. With one lap remaining, Edwin became re-invigorated by the proximately of the chequered flag and held the lead long enough to make the history books.
Edwin said: "I have a great team, great cars and we've had great racing strategies throughout the season. I was fortunate to be in a position to show what I can do and next season I'm going to keep fighting for wins. This is what racing is about when you get everything right and everyone is working together."
Edwin was presented with a laurel, a bottle of champagne, and a cut glass trophy. For winning the championship - in only his second full season of motor sport - the teenage sensation was presented with a golden racing helmet.
As a result of claiming the championship, Team Garbutt Heaters were invited to take part in a charity fundraising Grand-Prix next month in Portugal. Unfortunately due to school commitments Edwin has had to decline the opportunity. He will however, make an appearance in the Springbok racing season starting in South Africa.
l Edwin is now actively looking for further sponsorship for next season, and would like to hear from any interested parties, for further information call Mr. Andrew Steel on 01947 602814.
