Spennymoor Boxing Academy returned from the world-famous Stockholm Box Cup in Sweden with a magnificent two gold and two silver medals and a wealth of experience that money could not buy.
The three-day tournament was attended by teams from the USA, Russia, Gerogia, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Sweden as well as Spennymoor who were actually billed and announced as Great Britain.
Spennymoor's team was Gary Reay, Mark Moffatt, James Ellis, Carl Fawcett, Kyle Ellis and Billy McAloon and all boxed extremely well and thrilled the huge arena with their typical English blood and thunder style against their more technical foreign opponents.
All were drawn in tough groups and all boxed really well. Billy McAloon and Kyle Ellis were beaten to get into the medal stages, but learned a great deal. Mark Moffatt and Gary Reay never put a foot wrong to win the much coveted gold medals with James Ellis and Carl Fawcett settling for hard earned silver medals.
Having reached the finals stars of the tournament were the USA's national junior side who won a hat full of medals and had on display some terrific talent.
Russia also proved to be a very strong boxing nation.
Robert Ellis said: "Our boys have once again rubbed shoulders with some of the world's boxing elite and come home with heads held high and with medals around their necks.
They do everyone proud and made a lot of new friends in the process. They enjoyed the hospitality of the beautiful city of Stockholm and have gained a great wealth of boxing knowledge in the process. They were magnificent."
The trip to Stockholm was kindly sponsored by Wayne Baister of Bertie Quality Clothing and Andrew Ward of Workwear Express and Mr Dennis Dolphin of Dolmay Construction donated hooded tops for the whole squad.
The lads are now in training for the club's annual dinner tournament at Spennymoor Leisure Centre on Friday, November 14.
Tickets are available from Robert Ellis on07968 205043.
