A TEENAGER who had to have 50 stitches to his face after a vicious attack is now afraid to leave his home.

Lee Lenaghan, from Redcar, should find out from doctors next week whether he will need plastic surgery to the wounds which may leave him scarred for life.

The student was rushed to hospital on Saturday night after the attack in Leo's Bar on Redcar Esplanade at 11.35pm which left him bleeding heavily.

"I have been shaking since it happened and I still don't want to go out," said Lee who is recovering at home.

"The wound nearly cut through to my mouth. I'm in a lot of pain.

"I just want someone to come forward and give a statement to the police about what happened so they can catch the people who did this."

Lee was collecting two drinks from the bar when he turned and felt the glass hit his face.

"I was in shock," he said. "I couldn't do anything. The glass cut an artery in my face and blood was just spurting out."

Earlier in the evening Lee had exchanged words with a man in the bar who tried to start a fight with him.

"He'd told me to go outside for a fight but I didn't," said Lee. "I thought he'd been calmed down by his friends, but then a few minutes later he came and attacked me. I've been told there were a couple of men with him so I'm not sure who hit me."

Detective Constable Mick Harper said the attack appeared to be unprovoked.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attack or anyone with information to contact DC Harper on (01642) 302626.
