VETERANS of a forgotten war gathered at the weekend to pay their respects to comrades who did not return home.

On Saturday, about 300 members of the Palestine Veterans' Association attended a service at Eden Camp military museum, near Malton, North Yorkshire, to remember those who died in Palestine between 1945 and 1948 while trying to keep the peace between Arabs and Jews.

About 800 British servicemen and women, including Second World War veterans and national servicemen, died during the conflict.

Eden Camp held its first reunion for Palestine veterans in 1999, to mark the launch of an exhibition that tells the story of conflicts in which British forces have served since 1945.

Because Palestine was the first, those who had been involved were invited to attend the launch.

It led to the formation of the Palestine Veterans' Association, with members returning for a reunion every year since then.
