CAR fanatic Kerry Bell is flying the flag for equality after becoming the North East Chamber of Commerce's (NECC) first female car mechanic.
Keen to pursue her passion for motors, Kerry sought the help of the NECC, which helped get her chosen career on the right track with work-based training.
The 18-year-old is currently working towards a foundation modern apprenticeship in vehicle maintenance, while working four days a week at Fleet Serve, Blaydon, and one day a week at Tyneside Training Services.
Kerry, from Prudhoe, Northumberland, said: "I really love cars and thought it would be a great trade to get into. I had never seen a female car mechanic before and I just thought why not? I had been trying to get an apprenticeship for a couple of years when somebody recommended I try the chamber.
"Some people do think my passion for cars is a bit out of the ordinary, but I love it. It is definitely where my future lies."
Henry Evans has been running Fleet Serve for 12 years and contacted the chamber when he needed an extra pair of hands.
He said: "I chose Kerry as she seemed keen and wanted to do the work. She is the first woman I have taken on here and so far I am impressed. I can see her staying here a long time and succeeding in the world of mechanics."
Caroline Whitmore, assistant manager at NECC's Hexham training centre said: "Kerry is the first female car mechanic we have ever placed and she has overcome a few barriers to get there as well, which is tremendous."
