YOUNGSTERS are being invited to a party during their October school break - but they will need to take their wellies and a trowel.
Hambleton District Council is hosting a planting party in Northallerton as part of a scheme to spruce up a beckside walk.
Hundreds of bluebell, primrose and wild garlic plants will be dug into land at Stone Cross as part of a scheme to create a wildlife haven.
The 17-acre site, on the edge of Northallerton, is already a popular haunt of walkers and joggers.
Two bridges across Willow Beck were installed last year and a footpath created to enhance the rural and woodland feel of the area. The planting of wild flowers will complete the £26,000 project.
"This area is a green lung for Northallerton and must be maintained as a wildlife area," said the council's vice-chairwoman, Councillor June Imeson.
"Much wildlife has already been reported at the site and by adding wild flowers we hope to attract even more.
"We hope lots of local children will come along to help with the planting. They will be creating an area that people of all ages can enjoy for years to come."
The event will be held next Tuesday. Youngsters can join Coun Imeson at Hambleton Leisure Centre from 10.45am. Where needed, equipment will be provided.
