OUTpatients and visitors to a North Yorkshire hospital will now be able to take public transport right to the front door.

A £60,000 project will allow buses to pick up and drop off passengers within the grounds of the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

The provision of an exit road from the hospital to Bullamoor Road means that buses will operate through the site, serving a bus shelter next to the accident and emergency department and the hospital's main entrance, from Monday.

North Yorkshire County Council is spending £114,700 as a result of a successful bid to the Government's Rural Bus Challenge competition.

This also includes the provision of a new bus service, the Friarage Flyer, which will operate on Monday to Fridays between Masham, Well, Carthorpe, Exelby, Leeming Village and the hospital.

Other bus services operated by Arriva North East to Bedale, Abbotts to Stokesley, John Smiths to Thirsk, and Dales and District to Richmond and the Northallerton Estates will also serve the site.

Hospital manager John Gibb said at yesterday's launch: "This signals our support to public transport in the area. This will enable patients, carers and staff to have direct access into the hospital site."
