A Multi-million pound science block, library and IT Centre at Durham High School for Girls has been opened by record-breaking triple jumper Jonathan Edwards.

The two-storey building is part of a development of the school campus and has been designed to unify the differing styles of the surrounding buildings.

The new building, designed by Stockton architects, Dewjoc, provides six science laboratories, two IT laboratories and a library.

Dewjoc worked with Newcastle's Whelan Construction on the project, completing it on time and within budget.

Headmistress Ann Templeman said: "The new building underlines the school's commitment to excellence and provides a superb working environment for staff and pupils.

"We are delighted that the new building meets our highest expectations and are confident it will make a significant contribution to continuing the school's excellent academic record."

Dewjoc partner Steve Agar said: "We have a long tradition of work in the educational field. Our experience in the sector means we are able to design a building for Durham High School for Girls that suits the needs of each scientific discipline, staff and pupils."

Bill Swan, managing director of Whelan Construction, said: "This contract was a great challenge to our managerial site organisational skills, and the building was successfully completed within a demanding timescale."
