WORK on a housing scheme which will create a new community for elderly people will start next month.
The project will replace the existing sheltered accommodation at John F Kennedy House, in Thornaby, Teesside, and will provide housing for people with different levels of care and which is flexible to fit in with individual needs.
The development is due to start next month when the demolition of the existing buildings will be carried out, and it is hoped the scheme will be completed by January 2005.
The project, which has been created by Stockton Borough Council in conjunction with Anchor Trust, will cost a total of £4.19m. It will consist of 31, two-bedroomed apartments and 17, two-bedroomed bungalows, each with its own entrance lounge, shower room and fully-fitted kitchen.
It is also hoped the project will achieve Eco Homes Standard by having low heating and lighting requirements, high insulation values and minimising the impact on the environment through the use of ecologically sensitive materials.
Councillor Martyn Ingram, the council's cabinet member for housing and community safety, said: "The scheme has been designed with safety and security in mind, and enables residents to maintain independence while still having their care needs met."
