A COMMUNITY bonfire threatened with cancellation will now take place thanks to the efforts of a parish council.
The residents of Masham thought the popular annual event would not take place following the withdrawal of the retained fire crew who have organised it for the past 30 years.
In previous years, the event has been well attended and there were no problems with the venue at the town's recreation ground.
But, every year, firefighters said fewer and fewer people who turned up to watch the display could be persuaded to give donations to cover the cost.
Announcing their decision to pull out of the event, the crew said they were tired of people turning their backs on the collection buckets. Some had even donated washers instead of money, they said.
As a result, accounts for the past two years have shown a loss.
However, the retained crew's decision to pull out galvanised the parish council, which organised a sub-committee to find a solution to save the event.
This week, the sub-committee was able to confirm that this year's Bonfire Night display would go ahead and that the retained crew had been persuaded to maintain a presence.
"The community is now four-square behind the committee," said parish council spokeswoman Flo Grainger.
"Collecting boxes are filling, some businesses are contributing generously, the parish council is dealing with the insurance and underwriting part purchase of the fireworks, and the Town Hall Association has given £500 in the interest of public safety.
"Meanwhile, money-spinning events are also taking place, including a pub quiz and a domino drive.
"At last, appreciation of past efforts is being recognised and a fine community effort is emerging."
It is hoped additional funding to cover the costs will also be raised through a voluntary admission fee this year, but there has already been enough money collected for plans to be drawn up for a barbecue.
The bonfire will be held on the Recreation Ground, in Masham, on Saturday, November 8.
A firework display will be at at 6.30pm and the bonfire will be lit at 7pm.
