AN 11-YEAR-OLD'S comic creation is to appear in The Beano and Dandy, after he was named the UK's Best Young Cartoonist.
Ben Nightingale's comic strip hero, Jonny Gizmo, a mad inventor who creates robots to do household chores, so impressed judges in a national competition that his illustrations will appear in both comics. Ben, from Alpine Court, Chester-le-Street, beat off competition from hundreds of young artists to secure a place at one of five regional heats.
There he learnt the art of professional cartooning from Beano and Dandy experts and submitted a second Jonny Gizmo adventure. Ben went on to win the national finals and won a trip to the Beano and Dandy HQ, to watch his cartoon strip roll off the press.
Ben said: "This has made me want to carry. My dream is to work for the Beano & Dandy when I grow up."
He also won a computer, drawing software and a year's supply of Capri-Sun from the sponsors.
