VILLAGERS are objecting to a planning application to build four large poly-tunnels on nearby farmland.
A petition against the proposed development at Page Farm, on the southern side of Heighington, has been raised by residents who fear the development will damage the character of the village.
Residents believe the tunnels together will cover an area that could accommodate the village's church, St Michael's, more than 20 times.
Those living in Garthlands have been notified by Darlington Borough Council planners about the application, as their properties overlook the application site.
Joan Johnson said: "These tunnels are colossal. Three of them will be 32m wide and 55 to 65m long, while the other one will be 32m wide and 80m long.
"This is not about us losing a nice view from our houses, this is about protecting the character and rural charm of the village."
Ros Hepple, said: "We are objecting because of the size of the project, the environmental impact it will have and traffic issues."
Heighington Parish Council is also opposing the development.
The applicant declined to speak to The Northern Echo about the plans last night.
The proposals will be discussed by Darlington council's planning committee next month.
