A NEW pedestrian and cycleway linking three east Durham communities has opened.
The Greenway joins the villages of Wingate, Station Town and Deaf Hill using traffic-free paths and quiet roads to Trimdon Colliery.
Local artist David Gross worked with village residents to produce artworks and sculptures along the way.
The route, enhanced with its ornamental landmarks and two wetland areas, will form a link with the National Cycle Newtwork Route 1.
Funding contributions totalling £465,000 have gone towards making the pathway project an oustanding success.
It will also form part of Sustrans' Green Routes, the Safe Routes programme funded by the National Lottery's New Opportunities Fund.
At the opening, local children cycled along the route with Len O'Donnell, who is county councillor for the Wingate area.
