VICTIMS of domestic violence can access confidential advice and support from a drop-in centre launched in a Darlington supermarket yesterday.
Victim Support has set up the listening service in the foyer of Asda, in Whinbush Way, in the hope of strengthening its presence in the community.
Dawn Storey, a trained volunteer for Victim Support, said: "We approached Asda to allow us to hold the drop-in sessions because we want to increase people's awareness of domestic violence.
"We believe that the subject needs to be made more prominent, and our support needs to be accessible to the public."
Darlington MP Alan Milburn launched the service.
He said: "Domestic violence is a very serious crime and the victims of this crime need professional support and practical help."
The drop-in service will operate on the last Thursday of every month, with two volunteers at the store to talk to customers.
Anyone requiring ongoing support will be advised to use the group's Duke Street office.
Asda events coordinator Jane Chapman said: "I think this is a great way to highlight the issue."
The next session at the store will be between 10am and 3pm on Thursday.
