A FORMER lifeguard is knocking sports fans for six Down Under.
Pool attendant James Lowe, from Northallerton, North Yorkshire, has swapped his swimming gear for cricket whites - and a new life in Australia, where he has been awarded a scholarship with the cricket team in Perth.
The 22-year-old has been working out at Hambleton Leisure Centre, in Northallerton, for many years, taking part in swimming, coaching courses and summer activities while at school.
Three years ago, he landed a job at the centre, but continued to take time out each summer to play cricket.
He said: "After a good season with Durham Cricket Club this summer, I was delighted to be given the chance to play for Perth.
"I will be able to play a game I love in a country that enjoys the game so much.
"The staff at Hambleton Leisure Centre have always supported me when I have played cricket for Durham, but I have never left them to go as far away as Australia before."
Mr Lowe flew out to Perth last week and is not expected back in Hambleton until next spring, when he will return to Durham Cricket Club to fulfil the second half of his contract.
Hambleton Leisure Centre manager Richard Dowson said: "This is a dream opportunity for James and we wish him the best of luck as he continues his professional cricketing career.
"We do not expect to see him back here working, although we will always find a place at the poolside for a celebrity."
