THE careful rejuvenation of one of the region's theatrical gems has been recognised by a national award.
Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal, which reopened in September after a £1.5m facelift, has been presented with a special achievement in regional theatre award by industry publication, The Stage.
It was presented at the Theatrical Management Association Awards in London to chairwoman Lady Crathorne.
Reading the citation at the ceremony, actress Isla Blair said: "The refurbishment represents something more than mere preservation.
"That it could be achieved is thanks to the impressive grassroots support and interest this venue draws from a wide geographical radius and age range in an area not amply provided by theatre.
"The level of commitment shown over many years by a large team of volunteers has enabled it to survive financially and develop artistically.
"Its existence and growth are testament to its success as a theatre truly at the heart of its local community."
Theatre manager Vaughn Curtis said: "This award will be a great encouragement to us as we take forward work on stage two of the project.
"The theatre's potential is enormous and we must ensure we build on the firm foundation that has been established."
