THE largest city in the UK without a cinema is to hold its first film festival next month.

Football fans and anti-racism campaigners have united to bring the event to Sunderland.

The event has been organised by members of Sunderland Fans against Racism and the Unity organisation, along with Wearside filmmakers and local movie critics.

It begins on Saturday, November 15, at 7pm, in St Joseph's Church Hall, Millfield. There will be a showing of Kes, introduced by Barry Hines, author of the book on which the film was based, A Kestrel for a Knave.

Other events will take place at venues across Wearside and South Shields from November 27 to November 30.

These include a question and answer session with Neil Marshall, director of hit horror film Dog Soldiers, and a celebration of Indian cinema with a Bollywood night at the Stadium of Light.

North-East film producers have been working with pupils in four Sunderland schools, and the resulting short films will get their debut at the event.
