FORMER Middlesbrough midfielder Paul Gascoigne has earned a glowing tribute from Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Dave Jones as he battles back to fitness, writes Steven Baker.

Gascoigne, 36, is training with Wolves with a view to making a dramatic comeback to English football. Jones is refusing to consider the possibility of the England legend, who has been strongly linked with a move to Darlington, signing on at Molineux.

But he said: "Paul's getting fitter and enjoying the training sessions, and it's a pleasure to have him around the place.

"There's no time limits on anything and business is business. If I feel there's something there we'll discuss it, but we're just letting him get fit and we'd love it if he did.

"It'd be fantastic for him to rediscover what he had got and see him play again.

"Maybe it'll take longer than people think. If he does it for us and gets up and running, or if it means we've got him ready for someone else, then even better for him and for them.

"It's important for me to leave him alone as he's worked so hard in trying to get fit.

"His body has to recover from the training sessions. I need to be here to advise him and he listens to that. It's just a case of getting him fit, sharp and playing."

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough striker Jamie Cade has had his loan spell with Chesterfield extended by another month.

The 19-year-old has scored three goals in his last four appearances for the Spireites.

Chesterfield manager Roy McFarland said: "Jamie's now starting to get into his stride, so we're delighted that Middlesbrough have agreed to extend his loan period with Chesterfield by a further month."
