YOUNGSTERS in Billingham have been given the chance to learn how to bowl thanks to a National Lottery grant.
Bowls coach Brian Peart secured £1,007 from the Awards For All scheme to buy specialist equipment for Billingham Forum.
Six sets of coloured bowls have been bought. These allow easy identification of woods by individual players who are new to the game.
The woods are smaller than normal sets and enable children and people with grip problems to take part.
Mr Peart has also bought a set of calipers for measuring the distance between woods, six carrying cases, measuring tapes, wedges to support bowls when measuring and a target mat.
Mr Peart has organised a series of open sessions for anyone interested in taking part in free coaching sessions, which are open to anyone over eight years old.
He said: "These taster sessions are a perfect opportunity for people to give bowls a go. I will also be giving coaching points to more experienced players, who may need to improve their technique."
The sessions will be held on Friday, November 21, from 10am to 2.30pm, Saturday, November 22, from 10am to 4.30pm, and Sunday, November 23, from 10am to 2.30pm.
Anyone unable to attend can take part in Tuesday coaching sessions at the Forum, from 8.30am to 10.30am. They cost £1.50.
