Shildon's Garry Barnes is in the running for a national award after starring in Saturday's FA Cup fourth qualifying round against Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Barnes netted a hat-trick as Shildon progressed to the first round proper for the first time in 42 years, where they will face Notts County.

He is nominated for the FA Cup Player of the Round alongside East Thurrock United's keeper Mark Hardingham, who saved a penalty in a 1-1 draw with Woking.

Fellow former Quaker, Steve Guinan, is also in the running after he scored a hat-trick against Harrow Borough for Hereford.

If Barnes, who was released by Darlington in 2001, wins he will receive £1,000 worth of Umbro football kit and equipment for the local school, club or organisation of his choice. He will also receive sports gear for himself, as well as an engraved salver.

FA director of marketing and communications Paul Barber said: "The FA Cup always produces heroes and last weekend was no exception. This is a chance for Shildon fans to really get behind Garry Barnes. The added bonus is that if Gary receives the most votes, grassroots football in the area will benefit thanks to the £1,000 kit donation from Umbro."

The FA wants fans to decide the overall winner by voting on-line at www.thefa.com. Votes must be cast before 5pm on Friday.
