A 40-YEAR-OLD man was yesterday undergoing hospital treatment after being kicked around the head by a gang of youths.
The Hartlepool man was waiting at a bus stop at about 12.45am yesterday morning when three men, all in their early 20s, launched the unprovoked attack.
He was kicked to the ground in the incident near Caesar's Palace, on York Road in the town.
Police were at the scene within minutes. Two men were arrested in nearby Murray Street and were being questioned last night.
Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly a taxi driver who stopped the police car and directed officers to the scene.
The victim received treatment at Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
Detective Sergeant Alan Todd, of Hartlepool CID, said: "This was an apparently unprovoked attack on a defenceless man simply sitting at bus stop. He was left with some really nasty injuries to his head and face. We need anyone who saw anything to come forward."
Anyone with information is asked to call the police on (01642) 302137.
