Mowden Park Under-15s' home match against Hartlepool Rovers on Sunday saw a turn around in their recent performances.
The first half had both teams fighting for control of the game but despite good defence work by Hartlepool Rovers, Mowden Park put the first points on the board with an outstanding try by Mathew Gee after around 10mins. Steven King's conversion put Mowden seven points clear.
Hartlepool fought back but some great defence by Mowden's Simon Apps, Luke Edwards, Mathew Gee, James Leonard and Paul O'Donnell, denied them the opportunity to score before half time.
Around five minutes. into the second half, Mathew Gee ran through the field before passing the ball just moments before being shut down to Chris Hossell who finished the run and placed the ball between the posts. Steven King again converted to put Mowden 14 points clear.
Hartlepool again fought back and at one point had the Mowden defence on the back foot and after a series of missed tackles, Hartlepool scored a try around 15 minutes. into the second half.
Mowden showed exceptional ball handling throughout missing only six passes in the entire match and, around 20mins. into the second half, a pass into the hands of Chris Hossell again left him the opportunity to run clean through the field to score his second try of the match. Steven King again took the conversion, putting Mowden 14 points clear again.
Hartlepool Rovers determination to get back into the game put Mowden on the defence again and with ten minutes left to the whistle, the whole Mowden team had to pull all the stops out. A great effort by the forwards to prevent Hartlepool from gaining ground, and some good clearing by Matthew Gee and Steven King eventually denied the visitors any last minute glory.
Final score was Mowden Park 21, Hartlepool Rovers 7.
The Under-13s were at Gosforth and all credit to Gosforth who started the game with intent and outplayed Mowden for much of the first half. The Gosforth backs were particularly good, scoring three out of their four tries and taking Gosforth into a commanding lead of 24-0 at half time. The second half was a different matter. Mowden's forwards woke up and their backs were more organised both in defence and attack. It was as if a different team was on the pitch with the Mowden forwards taking control of the game.
Mowden scored a well deserved try as a result of pressure play. Gosforth put a poor pass out to their backs and Mowden fly half George Alley put a thumping tackle into his opposite number causing the ball to squirt out of the tackle. Inside centre, Tom Catterick said 'thank you very much', scooped the ball up and scored Mowden's try straight between the posts. Tom also scored the conversion. While Mowden controlled much of the second half, they could not stop a late flourish from Gosforth who scored in the last minute of the game from a No.8 pick up to make the final score Gosforth 31, Mowden 7.
