HAIRDRESSERS in north-west Durham have proved they are a cut above the rest when it comes to health and safety.
The first Derwentside Hairdressing Health and Safety Awards took place in Consett Civic Centre, with 11 salons making the grade.
The awards, run by Derwentside District Council's environmental health officers and the Hairdressing and Beauty Industry Authority, aim to encourage stylists to create a safer working environment. The award is valid for one year, after which the salons have to reapply to ensure that a high standard is consistently maintained.
Peter Reynolds, the council's director for environmental services, said: "The council is committed to working with local businesses to improve workplace health and safety standards.
"Successful salons have set a good example to others ."
