A 100FT mural, the handiwork of 25 young people, was unveiled at a ceremony at South Bank Youth and Community Centre yesterday.
The teenagers used a multi-cultural carnival as the main themes for the mural, which has cost £3,000. It also features children playing on Redcar beach, Redcar's town clock and Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge.
Six weeks of work in the summer holidays, under the guidance of artists Dave Howarch, Darren Cairn and Jean Hinley, from the Teesside Play and Education Resource Centre, produced the design.
A second part of the initiative involving young people is to recreate and maintain the centre's garden.
Two oaks, donated by The Tees Forest, were planted at yesterday's celebration by the South Bank Youth Matters Group and the council's Mayor, Councillor Norah Cooney
John Lambert, the Youth Offending Service's project development manager, said: "We are really proud of everyone who has taken part.
"The young people from across the borough have shown great enthusiasm and no little artistic talent to create what is going to be a real attraction for South Bank."
