Spennymoor midfielder Jon Cullen scored a wonder goal in his side's 3-0 win over Workington as his side eased into the second round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Former Hartlepool player Cullen, who returned to the club last month, scored a Beckham style goal, by chipping the Workington keeper from inside his own half.

Manager Tony Lee said: "It was a wonderful goal.

"Jon had the ball inside his own half, spotted the keeper near the edge of his box, and chipped it over him.

"It was a top quality goal, which capped a really good performance."

Moors took the lead after 20 minutes when Steve Preen broke clear, and beat the advancing keeper, and they went further ahead after the break when Neil Bishop finished off a four man move.

And Cullen's effort rounded off a good day for Moors, who celebrated their win by making two new signings.

Lee announced after the game that he had signed defender Andrew Bowes from Bedlington, and sought-after striker Chris I'Anson from Horden.

Lee released former Middlesbrough player Nicky Mohan last week, and he said: "We're hoping that the pair of them will strengthen the squad.

"Andrew has done well at Bedlington, while Chris has had a trial at Birmingham City this season."

Bishop Auckland had a bad day, losing 7-0 at Runcorn.

"We defended badly, and we were punished for every mistake," said manager Brian Honour. "We conceded a fluke goal after ten minutes, and it went downhill from there.

"If it wasn't for John Caffry in goal, it could have been ten. It was a weird game of football"

Runcorn took the lead when a clearance rebounded off Ged Courtney and into the net. They then went on to score another four before half-time.

Blyth are through to the next round after they won 2-1 at Wakefield and Emley. New signing Jamie Burt fired them into the lead with a 25-yarder, and he set up Anthony Woodhouse to score the second just before half-time. Wakefield pulled a goal back in the second half.

A late double strike by Altrincham substitute Nick Welton dramatically denied Gateshead a place in the next round.

They led thanks to a Michael Chilton goal after 31 minutes, and were looking good value for a win until Welton scored twice in the last three minutes

l In the UniBond League, Whitby lost 2-1 at Droylsden, after leading thanks to a penalty by Craig Veart after 68 minutes.

But Whitby then had keeper Adam Clementson sent off for retaliation, and Droylsden took advantage to score through Danny Byrne and Ged Murphy.
