THE ROYAL British Legion (RBL) Poppy Appeal was given the support of a famous veteran yesterday.
Captain Richard Annand, of the Durham Light Infantry, was awarded the Victoria Cross for outstanding gallantry in the face of the enemy during the retreat to Dunkirk in the early stages of the Second World War.
Despite his own injuries and coming under German fire, he rescued his batman in a wheelbarrow from behind enemy lines, before passing out as a result of the ordeal.
Now living in Durham, 88-year-old Capt Annand is a keen supporter of military charities and was more than happy to accept an invitation to endorse the Poppy Appeal.
He joined the Mayor of Durham, Councillor Ray Gibbon, and local RBL officials at yesterday's launch event at the Town Hall.
Capt Annand pledged to return next Tuesday, on his 89th birthday, to join the two-minute silence being observed at the Town Hall, at 11am.
Councillor Gibbon thanked Capt Annand and said he hoped people would back the appeal by buying a poppy.
"This is a unique appeal and it stands out on its own. You can't compare it with anything else and I'm sure it will be well-supported as ever."
The mayor and Capt Annand will also attend Sunday's Remembrance Day service at Durham Cathedral, at 10.15am.
