ARMY pilot Steve Beaumont has left the world of the military to become an airborne life-saver.
The 40-year-old, from Thirsk, has been appointed as relief pilot with Yorkshire Air Ambulance, after serving for 22 years in the Army.
He rose to the rank of tank commander in the Royal Dragoon Guards, before training as a pilot with the Army Air Corps in 1992. Based at Dishforth, he served in Bosnia, Macedonia, Kosovo, Jordan, Brunei, Norway, Italy and South Africa.
Mr Beaumont said: "I have joined Yorkshire Air Ambulance at an exciting time. There is talk of acquiring a second aircraft.
"The wonderful thing about the job is that you never know when or where you're going to be called. It can be quite exciting.
"We always carry two highly qualified paramedics with us and as time goes by, I'm very much hoping to learn some more first aid from them."
Mr Beaumont is also a relief pilot for the Teesside Airport-based Great North Air Ambulance.
He and his wife, Alison, who teaches in Ripon, have two children, Joshua, 14, and Willow, 12.
