CHILDREN in Darlington are learning about the importance of Remembrance Day from the town's mayor.
Darlington Borough Council Mayor Councillor Ron Lewis is presenting British Legion poppies to more than 8,000 pupils attending primary schools throughout the borough in the run up to November 11.
Assemblies are also being held at each school, attended by a representative from the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, to tell children about the origin of the Remembrance Day poppy emblem. Yesterday, Coun Lewis visited Reid Street and Alderman Leach primary schools.
Next Tuesday, he will be in High Row to observe the national two-minute silence in memory of war dead.
