RESIDENTS have successfully raised a target of £10,000 to repair their town clock.
Now plans are being made to apply to the Heritage Lottery fund for another £100,000 to fully restore the Grade-II listed, 1913 clock and building.
Former teacher Vera Robinson MBE, helped found the Friends of Redcar Town Clock after years of complaints from the public that the clock was broken.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council will match the £10,000 raised and plan to apply for a Lottery grant to revive the landmark.
Member of the Friends Charles Davis said that there had been a large number of donations to fix the clock in the past year. Schemes to raise the cash had included buying a £1 brick, holding old time-style cabaret nights and collecting cash in buckets at Morrisons supermarket.
Mr Davis said: "It has involved a lot of work but we're not stopping here and will continue to accept money."
John Partridge, Redcar town centre manager, said that the council had secured £11,000 of Government Single Regeneration Budget cash to pay for a comprehensive survey of the clock. Once that was completed, it would be possible to apply for Lottery money.
He said: "We have proved there is strong public support to have the clock restored which will help with the applications.
"The £10,000 is an enormous demonstration of support and shows this is a much loved public building."
The clock was unveiled as a memorial to King Edward VII.
