THE life and work of a little- known sculptor is the basis of a new exhibition at the Mercer Art Gallery in Harrogate.

Frances Darlington (1880-1939) was the daughter of a Harrogate solicitor.

She studied sculpture at the School of Art in London and went on to win a number of official commissions in Yorkshire, including a 70ft frieze in the foyer of Harrogate Theatre.

Matthew Whitney, of the Henry Moore Institute, who carried out the research for the exhibition, in collaboration with the Mercer gallery's curators, said: "Sadly, many of Frances Darlington's works have proved impossible to trace but her own photographs of sculptures in her studios will be on show.

"We are hoping that Harrogate visitors may be able to identify some of them."

The exhibition starts on Saturday and runs until January 11. It is open between Tuesday and Saturday, from 10am until 5pm, and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free.
