STAFF and students from Darlington College of Technology have been honoured for their efforts.
More than 200 people picked up prizes at the college's annual awards show at the Civic Theatre on Monday night.
A packed audience enjoyed a ceremony compered by broadcaster Alan Wright and the college's external relations director, Sue Campbell. The evening included performances from students and a fashion display.
Prizes were presented by members of the College Corporation Board - Darlington councillor Dorothy Long, Beaumont Hill School headteacher Dame Dela Smith, Darlington Building Society director Peter Rowley, college principal Sarah Farley and board chairman Alasdair MacConachie.
Mr MacConachie said: "The awards are a great credit to all the students and staff who have done such a wonderful job and I would like to thank Darlington businesses for supporting the college with such enthusiasm."
Award-winning mature student Vivienne McLoughlin told last night how learning to operate a computer helped her cope with tragedy.
The 57-year-old, from Darlington, lost her son Martin on September 13 after he was killed in a motorcycle accident in the Yorkshire Dales. The 34-year-old died on the Richmond to Reeth road after colliding into a tree.
"It was dreadful," Mrs McLoughlin said. "But I had just finished my basic computer course at Darlington College and it meant I could use email to break the tragic news to relatives and friends.
"When there is a death people are often embarrassed by it. I've known people cross the road because they don't know what to say. So it is easier to talk using emails."
She was named the college's Community Learner of the Year.
