A CATERING company has won an award for the healthy food which it provides for inmates at a Teesside prison.

Specialist prison and police catering company Eurest Criminal Justice (ECJ) has won a Food for Health award for its service at Holme House Prison, Stockton.

ECJ gained the award for offering prisoners menu choices which are low in fat, sugar and salt and high in fibre.

The company has achieved all three levels of the award, which is open to caterers in the Stockton area.

It demonstrated that, as well as healthy menus, it maintains high standards of food hygiene and provides a no-smoking environment.

The team at Holme House prepares breakfast, lunch and an evening meal for 990 prisoners.

Catering staff use healthy cooking methods, such as baking and grilling, instead of frying.

Fresh fruit is available at lunchtime and vegetables are steamed.

Inmates are also offered a designated healthy option at every meal as well as vegetarian and halal choices.

Mike Lees, governor at the prison, said: "This award is consistent with the prison's aim to provide a safe and humane environment for prisoners in partnership with ECJ. I am very pleased indeed."

The award was developed by North Tees Primary Care Trust, Stockton Borough Council and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust.
